JJ Watt wanted to play for the Green Bay Packers after leaving the Houston Texans. He offered himself offensively to them – but they refused.
JJ Watt is one of the best pass rushers in NFL history. He has already been honored with the Houston Texans, but his induction into the Hall of Fame is just a formality.
In 2021, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals after asking the Texans to be released to play with a contender. But first he wanted to go somewhere else, as he now revealed.
JJ Watt wanted to join the Packers: “I don’t care how low the number is”
On The Pat McAfee Show, Watt said: “I wanted to play for the Green Bay Packers in free agency, but they weren’t interested. I told my agent, ‘I don’t care how low the number is. I want you to get an offer in so I can at least listen to it.’ But they didn’t make an offer at all.”
Watt only managed five sacks with the Texans in 2020, never fewer in a full season. They then parted ways and Watt ultimately signed with the Cardinals for $28 million.
“I would have taken a lot less money because it’s my home.” Watt is from Wisconsin and went to college there. “I can tell you here and now that five million dollars would have done it for me without question.”
The Packers reached the divisional round in 2021 before falling to the San Francisco 49ers. Watt had to leave the season due to injury after just seven games with a single sack and ended his career after the 2022 season.
