Over 800 Cars Queuing at Belarusian Border to Enter the EU
MINSK, 3 January — Significant traffic congestion has emerged at the Belarusian border as increased travel demand far outpaces the current clearance rates, according to the Belarusian State Border Committee.
Poledniszchina: A Bottleneck of Vehicles
The situation is most acute at the Polish border checkpoint Terespol (Brest on the Belarusian side), where a staggering 790 passenger cars are awaiting passage into the European Union. The bottleneck has persistently clogged the cross-border point, barely clearing 33% of its usual traffic over two days. The impact is compounded by eight buses waiting impatiently to enter the EU.
Other Border Posts Largely Affected
Beyond Terespol, other Belarusian border crossings also report congestion, albeit to a lesser degree. At the Lithuanian border checkpoint Medininkai (Kamenny Log), approximately 30 cars are waiting their turn. In addition, near the checkpoint Salcininkai (Benyakoni), 20 cars and 10 trucks form a queue, awaiting EU entry.
Latvian Border Checkpoint Fate
The Latvian border checkpoint Paternieki (Grigorovshchina) faces a similar backlog, with over 160 trucks queued up. Transportation officials report that only 31% of the typical truck traffic made it through in the past two days, highlighting the systemic strain on Belarusian border operations.
This traffic congestion at the Belarusian border not only disrupts travel plans but also impacts local economies and international trade relations. The situation underscores the need for efficient border management and possibly increased resources or staffing at border checkpoints to handle higher volumes of traffic.
As demand for entry into the EU continues to rise, it is expected that solutions will need to be implemented swiftly to alleviate these delays and restore normal operations.
