Following a concerning cluster of measles cases at a middle school in Vienna’s Ottakring district in early March, the city’s health authorities (MA 15) have announced that the outbreak is now contained. Initial Outbreak Concentrated in School Environment

the initial surge in measles infections saw a disproportionate number of cases originating from Ottakring. Investigations revealed that a notable portion of confirmed cases were linked to a single middle school, encompassing both students and teaching staff. The MA 15 concluded that the school environment was the primary site of virus transmission.

Thorough Measures Halt Further Infections

Upon detection of the outbreak,the MA 15 implemented a series of comprehensive control measures. These included rigorous source tracing, thorough reviews of vaccination records for all 700 students and staff, and two on-site visits by an intervention team. Five individuals residing primarily in the area were identified as infected and later isolated for the standard 21-day quarantine period.

Furthermore, restrictions were placed on the movement of affected individuals lacking sufficient measles immunity. A vaccination campaign was planned,coupled with an informational evening to educate the public about measles prevention. These efforts proved successful, with no new cases reported in the district or the school since mid-March.
