In the winter season, orange fruits are widespread, and recent studies reveal that natural orange juice is not only a refreshing drink, but also provides real health benefits when consumed in moderation.

Orange juice is rich in antioxidants, most notably vitamin C, flavonoids, and carotenoids. A study published in the journal Nutrients showed that consuming natural orange juice may contribute to reducing indicators of oxidative stress and inflammation in adults.

These compounds neutralize free radicals, support immune system functions, and reduce chronic inflammation associated with heart and metabolic diseases, strengthening the body’s natural defenses.

Benefits of drinking orange juice in winter

Orange juice is beneficial for cardiovascular health, as a scientific review published in 2022 in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition showed that regular consumption of it protects against heart diseases, such as high blood fats and levels of inflammation.

These benefits are attributed to hesperidin, one of the natural flavonoids found in orange juice, which:

  • Improves the elasticity of blood vessels
  • It contributes to a slight lowering of blood pressure
  • Supports blood circulation in general
  • Benefits of orange juice for the brain and energy

The benefits of orange juice are not limited to the heart only, but also extend to brain health and cognitive functions. A scientific review published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience indicated that polyphenols in citrus fruits, such as hesperidin and naringenin, may:

  • Improved blood flow to the brain
  • Reduces neuroinflammation
  • Protects neurons from oxidative stress

Other research has also shown that these compounds may play a potential protective role against cognitive decline and neuroaging diseases.

Moderate consumption of orange juice

Despite the amazing benefits of orange juice, experts stress that moderation is key, as orange juice remains a concentrated source of natural sugar, and contains less fiber compared to eating whole fruit.

Nutritional guidelines recommend consuming 100% natural orange juice without added sugar, in an amount ranging between 120 and 150 ml per day, preferably with meals and not on an empty stomach.
