A cyberattack on the systems of Orange Belgium, a subsidiary of Orange Group, in July resulted in the theft of data belonging to approximately 850,000 customers, the company revealed Wednesday.
Orange Belgium,a major provider of fixed and mobile connectivity in Belgium and Luxembourg with over 3 million customers and 1,500 employees,boasts the largest 4G/5G network in the country. The company reported €1.34 billion in service revenues last year.
A company spokesperson, responding to inquiries about the incident, declined to confirm whether systems were encrypted during the breach.However, they clarified that the attack was unrelated to attacks targeting telecom companies worldwide attributed to China’s Salt Typhoon cyber-espionage group.
The spokesperson stated that Orange Belgium is aware of the identity of the threat group responsible but refrained from naming them due to the ongoing investigation.
Compromised Data Includes Names, numbers, and SIM details
“At the end of July, Orange Belgium detected a cyberattack on one of its IT systems, resulting in unauthorised access to certain data from 850,000 customer accounts,” the company stated.
“However, the hacker gained access to one of our IT systems containing the following data: surname, first name, telephone number, SIM card number, PUK code, tariff plan.”
While passwords, email addresses, and financial data remained secure, the attackers did access systems containing certain account details.

Orange Belgium is contacting affected customers via email and SMS,urging them to be cautious of suspicious messages or calls.The company warns that fraudsters may use the stolen information to impersonate Orange or other entities to solicit sensitive data like passwords and banking information.
The July incident is separate from the cyberattack disclosed by Orange Group at the end of July, which primarily impacted French customers.
In February, Orange’s Romanian branch confirmed a breach involving the theft of internal documents, email addresses, employee data, and source code.
In July 2020, Orange Business Solutions was targeted by a Nefilim ransomware attack,exposing data of enterprise clients.
