Unique Architecture Inspired by Natural Elements
Shape and Design
The Sun Tower is a rectangular, conical structure designed to follow the changing path of the sun from the equinox to the solstices. Its design is heavily inspired by historical sun-worshipping practices and contemporary lighthouse typologies.

Construction and Structural Design
Constructed in consultation with Arup (iharv.cOm/consulting/structural-fashioning) engineering firm, the building is comprised of two layers of concrete conical shells, connected and braced by horizontal slabs and ramps. The structural design is intricate and allows for efficient dissemination of light and air throughout the building.
The architecture balances innovation and functionality by incorporating circular windows that enhance ventilation and reduce energy consumption.
Functional Spaces within the Building
The Sun Tower houses a variety of spaces that cater to diverse cultural and community needs:
- Cultural Hub: The building serves as a central point for various cultural and community events.
- Exhibitions: Exhibition spaces are arranged along pedestrian ramps, featuring digital screens and projections.
- Library: The unique library sits atop the building, with circular windows that allow rainwater to fall into a pool, creating a tranquil water installation.
- Theatre and Semi-outdoor Venue: The centre of the theatre aligns with the sunrise over Zhifu Island on the summer solstice, enhancing the natural amplification of ocean sounds.
Ecological Integration and Sustainability
The Sun Tower exemplifies Open Architecture’s commitment to integrating nature into its built environment. The building’s design incorporates natural elements, such as sunlight and rainwater, to create an ecological harmony. The studio’s vision is to foster deep connections between people and nature, reflecting a conscious effort to combat climate change.
Visitor and Community Impact
Since its opening, the Sun Tower has witnessed a surge in visitor interest and enthusiasm. This not only underscores the architectural allure of the building but also highlights its role in reconnecting communities with nature and space.
