Scientists in Singapore have conducted a clinical trial to fill a gap in research on the effects of plant-based meat substitutes on human health.
Publika.az reported that they compared the effect of two types of diet on cardiometabolic parameters – consumption of animal meat or its plant analogues.
For the experiment, 89 Singaporeans aged 30-70 who did not suffer from type 2 diabetes, but were prone to it due to elevated blood glucose levels, were recruited. Other selection criteria include absence of obesity, serious illnesses, smoking habits and substance abuse. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups of 45 and 44 people. 42 and 40 people completed the entire study, respectively. For eight weeks, participants in one group had to replace regular protein-rich foods with a certain amount of animal meat, and in the other group with appropriate plant analogues provided by scientists.
