Olive Carthery, a beloved mother of three, peacefully left this world on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at Ward of Waterford Regional Hospital, The Oak Ward.

Olive’s passing has deeply affected communities across Waterford County, especially those involved in sports and equestrian activities. The news brought sorrow to mothers, fathers, friends, and colleagues who admired her vibrant energy and dedication.

Sports Tributes Pour In

New Ross Rugby Football Club delayed their St. Stephen’s Day activities to offer their condolences. In their tribute, they wrote, “Our heartbroken sympathies and condolences go to John on the loss of his beloved wife, and Emma, Tom, and Conor on the loss of their dear mother. We cannot express the sorrow in our hearts that we feel for all of Olive’s family and friends. May she rest in peace.”

The sadness extended beyond local rugby clubs, with Dundalk R.F.C and Inishowen Rugby Club also extending their heartfelt sympathy.

A Kindness to Her Horses

As a passionate horse lover, Olive’s connection with the equestrian community was profound. Ballyrue Equestrian shared a deeply somber tribute, stating, “It’s with a heavy heart that we share the devastating loss of our dearest friend Olive.”

The club highlighted her inspiring drive, enthusiasm, and kindness, making a significant impact on the industry. One member of the Ballyrue Equestrian community summed it up poignantly, saying, “She will be so sorely missed. I always admired Olive’s vibrant energy and enthusiasm towards everything she did. We will miss seeing her around Ballyrue and the little chats which always left us smiling from ear to ear. Thinking of you all and especially Olive’s family at this very difficult time. My heart goes out to you all. Rest in Peace.”

Ballyrue Equestrian also expressed their hope that there are horses in heaven, saying, “We hope there are horses in heaven. Rest in peace dear friend.”

Loyalty in Companionship

Olive was deeply involved in New Ross Swimming Club and the United Striders Athletic Club. The New Ross Swimming Club expressed their sadness, while the United Striders Athletic Club sent their thoughts and prayers, acknowledging the severe loss to their community.

A colleague at SETU in Waterford also shared their memories, saying, “Shocked and saddened to hear of Olive’s passing. She was a wonderful, supportive, funny, enthusiastic colleague who we were lucky to work with, even for just a short time. Deepest condolences to her family and friends and all who loved her.”

A Legacy of Love

Olive’s life was marked by love and dedication. Predeceased by her mother, Marie, she leaves behind her loving husband, John, and three cherished children, Emma, Tom, and Conor. She is deeply mourned by her father, Pat, brothers Eddie, John, Hugh, and Paudie, her mother-in-law Ann, sisters-in-law Sarah, Amy, Leona, Deirdre, Maeve, and Laura, and brothers-in-law James and Rory.

Her death leaves a significant void in the lives of her numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, extended family, neighbors, and a wide circle of friends. Olive’s life was indeed full of brightness and color, qualities she always encouraged in others.

Final Farewells

Visitation will take place at Doyle’s Funeral Home, The Old Rectory, Rosbercon, New Ross, until 6 p.m. on Friday, December 27. The Requiem Mass will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, at All Saints Church, Templetown, followed by her burial in the adjoining cemetery.

In keeping with Olive’s wishes, her family requests that guests wear bright colors to the funeral home and church to celebrate “a life full of brightness and color.”

As the community mourns Olive’s passing, her family and friends are comforted by the outpouring of love and support. Olive’s life was a testament to the value of dedication, kindness, and vibrant living. She will undoubtedly be missed by many.
