In September of last year, police in old Saybrook, Connecticut, initiated an examination that led to teh arrest of three individuals following the discovery of over 100 deceased animals across two residences. The case highlights the severe consequences of animal hoarding and neglect.

The initial investigation by the Old Saybrook police department uncovered a disturbing scene, including the remains of numerous rabbits, chickens, ducks, and cats.The extent of the animal deaths pointed to a larger issue of animal welfare within the properties.

Authorities also found living animals on the premises, reportedly kept in what they described as “inhuman conditions.” The state of these animals further emphasized the severity of the situation and the urgent need for intervention.

The investigation took a grim turn in January when law enforcement discovered more than 70 dead animals at a residence on River Street. An arrest warrant detailed the findings, revealing a total of 105 deceased animals, including 77 rabbits, 23 chickens, a zorrillo, a squirrel, two cats, and a dog.

According to the warrant, investigators encountered extreme hoarding conditions inside the house. Garbage piled “almost to the knees” caused important damage to the floors and walls. The residence also lacked essential resources such as food, water, and electricity, exacerbating the animals’ suffering.

Authorities stated that they made multiple attempts to contact the individuals associated with the properties-identified as Jennifer Crouse, 59; John Crouse, 70; and Soho, 34-beginning in September 2024. These attempts were initially unsuccessful.

the initial inspection of the property occurred on September 27,followed by subsequent monitoring inspections in January. The arrest warrants for the suspects were formally signed a month later, marking a significant step in the legal proceedings.

The investigation expanded when Old saybrook police reported visiting the Anthony P. Travisone Center for the Rhode Island Correctional Department on Wednesday. This visit stemmed from an initial investigation that triggered a separate inquiry into animal cruelty at 7 North Main St.

After an extensive search spanning several months, investigators located the suspects in Rhode Island over the weekend. This breakthrough led to their apprehension and subsequent transfer back to Old Saybrook.
