Ohio Weather: Thunderstorms Possible Sunday Night

by drbyos

A mild Sunday is expected with highs in the 60s before storms arrive in the evening. Here’s what you need to know!

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Our next weather maker is developing and is expected to move into the Midwest Sunday into Monday. This storm system is expected to bring rain and storms across Ohio, with snow likely across the Upper Midwest.

As the system develops on Sunday, strong southerly winds are expected to bring in warmer air across Ohio as temperatures reach the 60s for most of the state.

With warm air in place and enough moisture around, a band of rain and thunderstorms will move in late Sunday evening and into the overnight hours. A few of the storms could produce strong wind gusts to 60 mph and the Storm Prediction Center has placed some of Ohio in a Level 1 severe risk for that reason.

As the storms move eastward, a strong cold front will clear the rain and storms out, but will also usher in MUCH colder air.

Temperatures will be around the lower 60s at midnight Sunday night, but will be down into the 20s by noon on Monday. Nearly a 40° drop in temperatures in 12 hours.

This could lead to a “flash freeze” where wet roads from the rain overnight quickly freeze during the morning. If this occurs, slippery conditions are expected Monday morning into the afternoon.

With colder air settling in, some flurries or snow showers are possible later on Monday, but most of the snow will stay well to our north and west where a winter storm is likely from Minnesota to Wisconsin and Michigan.

Our 10 Weather Impact team is continuing to monitor the storm potential for Sunday night across central Ohio and will continue to provide updates throughout the weekend.
