Ohio Patients Face Insurance Headaches as Hospitals and Anthem Clash
Mounting tension in healthcare negotiations is causing anxiety for Ohio patients as two major hospital systems – The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Mount Carmel Health System – face potential contract terminations with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Uncertainty for Ohio State Patients
On Wednesday, 135,000 patients of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center received alarming emails warning that their Anthem coverage could be dropped from January 1st, 2024, unless a new contract is secured before the year’s end.
Thea Flittner, a Type 1 diabetic who received care at Ohio State during a high-risk pregnancy, highlights the anxiety surrounding the potential change. "You feel really uncertain because all of a sudden you are left wondering do I need to find new medical care? If we were to have another pregnancy what would my medical care look like and who would I go to?” she shared.
Both Ohio State and Anthem express optimism about reaching an agreement, but both place blame on the other for the ongoing impasse. Ohio State cites Anthem’s underpayment for services and failure to keep pace with rising healthcare costs, while Anthem argues that Ohio State’s demands are excessive, potentially increasing healthcare costs for consumers and employers.
Mount Carmel Faces Similar Challenges
Ohio State isn’t the only hospital system facing uncertainty with Anthem. Mount Carmel Health System is also entangled in contract negotiations, with similar concerns about payment terms and affordability for patients.
Mount Carmel argues that Aetna’s payments haven’t kept pace with rising healthcare costs, while Aetna insists that Mount Carmel’s demands would burden members and local employers with significant cost increases.
If a deal isn’t reached by December 31st, Mount Carmel patients on both commercial and Medicare plans will lose Anthem coverage in 2025.
This situation highlights a growing national trend of strained relationships between hospitals and insurance providers. The impact on patients, who become entangled in this complex web of negotiations, is a cause for serious concern.
