Odienné Dry Port: Future Logistics Hub Revealed

Odienné to Host Major Dry Port Project, Boosting Regional Trade

Strategic Site Secured for logistical Hub

A meaningful step towards enhancing Côte d’Ivoire‘s logistical capabilities has been taken with teh allocation of a 6,300-hectare site in Odienné for a major development project. This initiative, unveiled during the “Invest in Denguélé” business forum at the Djéguéya Festival, aims to establish a crucial dry port and associated infrastructure, promising to transform the region into a key trade hub.

Collaborative Effort Guarantees Project Viability

The Minister-Governor of the Autonomous District of Denguélé, Gaoussou Touré, emphasized the collaborative nature of this undertaking. The selection of the site was a joint decision involving the district, customary leaders, and the regional administration of Kabadougou. Bouakary Koné, Regional Director of Transport, affirmed the project’s secure foundation, stating, Today, there is a moral, political and administrative guarantee.

Dry Port to Extend San Pedro’s Reach

Of the expansive site, 400 hectares are specifically designated for the dry port, forming part of a broader strategy to extend the autonomous port of San Pedro’s operations. This strategic move aims to bring port activities closer to the borders of Guinea, Mali, and Burkina Faso, facilitating smoother and more efficient trade flows. This is notably relevant given the increasing trade volumes between Côte d’Ivoire and its landlocked neighbors. For example, recent data from the World Bank indicates a 15% annual increase in trade between Côte d’Ivoire and Mali, highlighting the need for improved logistical infrastructure.

Comprehensive Infrastructure plans

The development plans extend beyond the dry port itself. The site will also accommodate a bus station and storage facilities for both agricultural and mining products. This comprehensive approach aims to create a multi-faceted logistical center capable of handling a diverse range of goods.

Strategic Advantages of the Location

A delegation from the autonomous port of San Pedro lauded the site’s inherent advantages, noting its proximity to a national road and the presence of a power line. Ismaël Ouédraogo, a consultant specializing in port, rail, and urban transport infrastructure, further highlighted the future benefits of the planned Odienné-san Pedro rail line, stating that the site will eventually benefit from the Odienné-San Pedro rail line.

Economic Catalyst for Denguélé and Beyond

Local authorities are optimistic about the project’s potential to serve as a strategic lever for economic development, not only for the Denguélé district but for the entire nation of Côte d’Ivoire. By streamlining trade and attracting investment, the dry port is expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth across various sectors.
