Odense, the Danish women’s handball team set to face Győr in the Champions League final, has enjoyed a strong season, finishing as a regular season winner. However, their journey to the top has not been without its challenges, including a past controversy regarding European qualification.

Past Qualification Error Haunts Odense

Last season, Odense finished third in the regular season behind esbjerg and ikast, ultimately securing a bronze medal behind Esbjerg and Nyköbing, who contested the final. The European Handball Association (EHF) typically grants Denmark two Champions League spots to the championship finalists, Esbjerg and Nyköbing. Though, a potential third spot should have been allocated based on the regular season standings, according to Danish Federation regulations. This did not occur, and the spot was given to Odense, a decision that sparked controversy.

Frank Smith, director of competition for the Danish federation, acknowledged the error, stating that the EHF was also aware of the misallocation, which he attributed to chance. Daniel Grönhöj, president of the European League and a silver medalist, expressed outrage over the incident, citing meaningful financial and professional repercussions.

The details of this incident surfaced nearly a year later,coinciding with heightened scrutiny of international cup appearances during the men’s handball championship in Denmark.
