Get ready for more “ma”! A sequel to the 2019 thriller is in development, with Octavia Spencer reprising her iconic role.

Blumhouse is producing the next chapter of “Ma,” though details like the director and release date are still under wraps.

“‘Ma’ has proven to be a social phenomenon as its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma,” said Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse Productions, in a statement. “Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.”

In the original “Ma,” Spencer plays Sue Ann Ellington, a veterinarian who befriends a group of high school students. She allows them to party in her basement, but the situation turns deadly as their relationship deteriorates.

The Original “Ma”: A Box Office Hit

The first “Ma” film reunited Spencer with director Tate Taylor, known for directing her Oscar-winning performance in “The Help.” Released in May 2019, the Blumhouse production grossed $61 million worldwide.

“Ma’s” Enduring Popularity

Since its release, “Ma” has become a cultural phenomenon, inspiring memes and reaction images. In 2020, Octavia Spencer even hosted an online contest for the “best Ma meme.” In 2024, she referenced the film in a video for Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign.

“Ma” was also part of Blumhouse’s Halfway to Halloween campaign in May, receiving a one-night-only theatrical re-release alongside “M3GAN” and “Annabelle.”

The sequel was announced at Blumhouse’s Business of Horror event in Hollywood.
