Protecting Yourself from the Sun’s Harmful Rays: A Guide for Oaxaca Residents
The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Oaxaca is urging residents to take immediate precautions against prolonged sun exposure, notably during peak hours. Health officials emphasize the importance of safeguarding against the sun’s intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which poses notable health risks.
Understanding the Risks of UV Exposure
Dr. Martha escobar Vázquez, Head of Medical Benefits Services at IMSS, warns that unprotected and excessive sun exposure can lead to a range of health problems. These include painful skin burns, premature aging of the skin, increased risk of eye damage, and a heightened likelihood of developing skin cancer.According to the World Health organization (WHO), approximately 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed globally are skin cancers, highlighting the critical need for effective sun protection strategies.
Excessive sun exposure without proper protection can cause skin burns, premature aging, eye damage and increase the risk of developing skin cancer.

Heatstroke: A Life-Threatening Outcome
Beyond UV radiation, high temperatures can also trigger heatstroke, a severe condition requiring immediate medical attention. Heatstroke occurs when the body’s temperature rises rapidly, overwhelming its cooling mechanisms. without prompt treatment, heatstroke can lead to organ damage, coma, and even death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that heatstroke can occur even in healthy individuals during periods of intense heat and humidity.
Essential Sun Safety Tips for Oaxaca Residents
