Perera’s Journey: From cuba to the Mets and Back

yordis Perera, like fellow countryman Harold Vasequez, previously played for the FEPCUBE team. Perera’s journey reflects the aspirations of many young Cuban baseball players. In 2019, he left Cuba for the Dominican Republic, seeking to realize his dream of playing in Major League Baseball.

He signed with the New York Mets in March 2022, but his time in the organization was short-lived. Perera played 14 games at the Rookie level in 2023, posting a .175 batting average with one home run and six RBIs. He was released by the Mets in October of the same year and has not been affiliated with another MLB organization since.

Despite facing challenges in the U.S. system, Perera participated in a game for FEPCUBE against the MDC Sharks in Miami. Now, at 22 years old, he chooses to return to cuban baseball, a decision that speaks volumes about his commitment to his homeland.

The State of Cuban Baseball: Challenges and Opportunities

Perera’s return highlights the complex reality of Cuban baseball. While the island nation has a rich baseball history and continues to produce talented players, the sport faces significant challenges due to economic constraints and limited resources. Players frequently enough endure difficult conditions, including equipment shortages and sweltering heat during games.

Despite these hardships, the passion for baseball remains strong in Cuba. The return of players like Perera, who have experienced professional baseball in other countries, can inject new energy and expertise into the local league. Their presence can also serve as an inspiration for young Cuban players who dream of one day playing at the highest level.
