Nose Picking & Alzheimer’s: Could There Be a Link?

by Archynetys Health Desk

SYDNEY / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – A new study from Australia suggests that nose picking could increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that certain bacteria enter the brain through the nose and trigger processes similar to Alzheimer’s. This discovery could open up new avenues for research into the disease.

A recently published study by scientists at Griffith University in Australia has revealed a potentially worrying link between nose picking and an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers examined the influence of the bacterium Chlamydia pneumoniae, which is able to enter the brain through the nasal cavity and trigger processes that are similar to the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

The study, which was carried out on mice, showed that the bacterium can travel to the brain via the olfactory nerve, especially if the nasal mucosa is damaged. This damage can be caused by frequent nose picking or nose hair picking. In the brains of the mice, the infection led to increased deposition of amyloid beta protein, which is also found in high concentrations in Alzheimer’s patients.

Although the results have so far only been demonstrated in mice, they are still of great importance for human health. The researchers emphasize that further studies are needed to confirm whether this mechanism also occurs in humans. If confirmed, this could represent a new approach to preventing and treating Alzheimer’s disease.

The discovery also raises questions about the role of bacteria and viruses in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. While age is considered the main risk factor, it is increasingly believed that environmental factors and infections may also play a role. The researchers plan to expand their studies to humans to better understand the exact mechanisms and develop possible prevention strategies.
