Scorching Heatwave Grips Vietnam: Health and safety Advisory

Intense Heatwave Sweeps Across Northern and Central Vietnam

Vietnam is currently experiencing a widespread and intensifying heatwave, notably affecting the northern and central regions. The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecast has issued warnings as temperatures soar, posing notable health risks and increasing the potential for wildfires.

Forecasts indicate continued high temperatures across Northern and Central Vietnam.

The northern mountainous areas and the central regions are bearing the brunt of the heat, with maximum temperatures ranging from 35 to 37 degrees Celsius (95 to 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit), and some areas exceeding 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit). The northern Delta region is also experiencing daytime heatwaves, with temperatures surpassing 35 degrees Celsius in certain locations.

This extreme weather event underscores the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves globally, a trend scientists attribute to climate change.According to a recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Southeast Asia is particularly vulnerable to rising temperatures and extreme weather events.

Regional Breakdown: Temperature Extremes and Humidity Levels

A closer look at the affected regions reveals the severity of the situation:

  • Northern Region: Generalized heatwaves are expected to persist, with temperatures generally between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius, and some areas exceeding 38 degrees Celsius.
  • Central Region (Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen): A two-day heatwave is forecast, with maximum temperatures ranging from 35 to 38 degrees Celsius, and some areas exceeding 38 degrees Celsius. The lowest relative humidity varies from 45 to 50%, creating a stifling atmosphere.
  • Central Highlands and Southern Region: Generalized heat is present, with common temperatures of 35 to 36 degrees Celsius, and some areas exceeding 36 degrees. Humidity fluctuates between 55 and 60%,contributing to discomfort. The hottest period typically occurs between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. daily.

duration and Expected Relief

While the heatwave in the north is expected to subside around April 22nd, the zone from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen should experiance cooling from April 23rd to 24th. However, the central highlands and the south are likely to endure the heat for several more days.

Official Recommendations and safety Measures

The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasts strongly advises the public to take precautions during periods of intense sunshine. Key recommendations include:

  • limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
  • Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and electrolyte-rich beverages to prevent heatstroke and heat exhaustion.
  • Being aware of the increased risk of fire and explosion in residential areas, industrial zones, and natural forests.

The current level of risk of natural disasters due to heatwaves is assessed at level 1.

“The best defense against extreme heat is readiness and awareness. Stay informed, stay hydrated, and look out for vulnerable members of your community.”

Local Concerns: Hai Duong Province Faces High Fire Risk

The Hai Duong Hydrometeorological Station reports that Hai Duong province will experience changing cloud cover, with rain at night and sunny weather during the day.Southeast winds will be at level 2. The highest temperature of the day is expected to be 32 – 33 degrees Celsius.

However, prolonged sunshine has significantly increased the risk of forest fires in the cities of Kinh Mon and Chi Linh. The forest fire alert level in these two localities is at level 5, indicating an extremely risky situation with significant fire potential in all types of forests and rapid spread.

This heightened fire risk underscores the importance of adhering to fire safety regulations and exercising extreme caution with any potential ignition sources.
