PYONGYANG – Mobile phones in North Korea are subject to intense scrutiny, reflecting the governmentS strict control over details and communication. A recent report highlights the extent of this supervision, revealing that North Korean smartphones are equipped with systems that automatically take screenshots of user activity every five minutes.

According to the BBC, which obtained a North Korean-made phone, these devices have built-in surveillance mechanisms that monitor user behavior. The phones appear outwardly similar to standard smartphones, featuring curved screens and a “U”-shaped notch.

However, the software contains a hidden function that captures screenshots every five minutes, storing them in a secret, inaccessible folder within the phone’s gallery application. These screenshots are reportedly taken regardless of whether the phone is actively in use.

Government Oversight

“With this system,the North Korean government can oversee what users see on their cellphones.”

The constant surveillance allows the North Korean government to monitor what its citizens are viewing and doing on their phones.This level of oversight raises meaningful privacy concerns and underscores the limitations on freedom of expression in the country.

In addition to the screenshot function, the phones also censor certain words and phrases deemed inappropriate by the government. For instance, the term “oppa,” a Korean word used by women to address older male relatives or friends, is replaced with “comrade” or “friend.”

Similarly, typing “South Korea” results in the phrase being blocked and replaced with “puppet state” or “doll country,” reflecting the North Korean government’s hostile stance towards its southern neighbor.

Information Control

While it remains unclear whether these phones are standard issue for the general public or reserved for government use, the report suggests a concerted effort by the North Korean government to maintain strict control over information and suppress dissenting views.
