GRAND FORKS, N.D. –
The UND Open kicked off on a high note Friday evening with the indoor discus throw event, a rarity in indoor track and field. Staged inside the Pollard Athletic Center, North Dakota showcased its prowess by clinching both the men’s and women’s titles in this one-of-a-kind event.
Ethan Thomas Leads Men’s Discus Throw
Ethan Thomas stole the show in the men’s discus throw with a standout performance. On his first attempt, Thomas managed a remarkable throw of 166 feet 5 inches, equivalent to 50.73 meters. This throw was so precise and powerful that it could be likened to completing a 55-yard pass in football terms. His dominance in the event was evident as he secured the gold medal with this initial throw.
Close behind was Sean Erickson from Mary, who managed a throw of 157 feet 3 inches, equating to 47.94 meters. Erickson’s performance, while excellent, was just shy of Thomas’ performance, settling him in second place.
Kenna Curry Retains Women’s Discus Title
Continuing its strong tradition in the event, North Dakota’s women’s discus team secured its fourth consecutive victory. Leading the charge was Kenna Curry, who not only won the event but also set a personal best throw of 155 feet 6 inches, or 47.4 meters. This impressive feat solidifies her reputation as one of the top throwers in collegiate athletics.
Closing in behind Curry was Haidyn Skeen with a throw of 126 feet 8 inches (38.62m), securing the silver medal. Rounding out the podium was Justina Esangbedo with a throw of 125 feet 9 inches (38.33m). Both Skeen and Esangbedo delivered strong performances, contributing to North Dakota’s clean sweep of the event.
