Norma Piña, former minister president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), reappeared publicly and regretted the changes of the reform to the Judicial Branch, although she assured that, together with her colleagues, “we did everything “what we should have done.”
During the forum “The Future of Justice: Judicial Independence in Mexico and its Regional Environment” at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Piña pointed out that the reform of the Judicial Branch was “the perfect storm,” and that There were changes in the country in a few months that have taken years in others, highlighting Brazil, Peru and Costa Rica as examples.
“In my opinion, it was the perfect storm. Why, if in other countries we take the same path, why in Mexico it ‘exploded’ so quickly? That here in a few months what they have wanted in all countries with this type of attacks on the Judiciary was achieved… It was the perfect storm,” argued Norma Piña, who is currently a pensioner of the Judiciary.
Why did the Judiciary lose independence? This is what Norma Piña thinks
During her speech at UNAM, Norma Piña reflected on the reasons why the Judiciary in Mexico faced the structural changes that led to the election of judgesministers and magistrates.
“What caused this change to occur so quickly was the overrepresentation in the electoral process. If there was a way to change the Constitution, because it is our basis, that changed the independence and autonomy of the Judiciary,” explained Norma Piña.
Finally, the former minister president of the Court mentioned that she still thinks about ways to reverse the Judiciary, and without mentioning electoral aspects, she explained that access to education is essential for Mexicans, in order to understand the differences between the local and Federal Judicial Power.
In addition, he highlighted the importance of the judicial career for people who are part of the Judicial Branch, since it is a job like that of any professional that is acquired over time.
