Police report an altercation in the stadium in front of Nordderby
3:52 p.m.: According to the police, there was a violent confrontation in the stadium before the start of the northern derby in Hamburg between Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen. The police situation center said HSV ultras were involved in the incident. When asked, the spokesman was unable to provide details.
At the traditional duel in the Volksparkstadion, the rivals from Bremen will be back this Sunday (on TV at 3:30 p.m./DAZN, in the live ticker on FOCUS online) with two players who have a Hamburg past: Striker Justin Njinmah was born in Hamburg and was even a HSV fan as a child. Werder lured the defensive talent Karim Coulibaly away from their big rival’s U19 team a year and a half ago, amid great fanfare.
Much praise for Coulibaly
However, his coach does not believe that the 18-year-old defender will be particularly nervous when he returns to Hamburg. “He performed the same this week as before, and he should keep it that way,” said Horst Steffen about Coulibaly.
The Bremen coach put Werder’s discovery of this season in the starting line-up on the second matchday due to personnel shortages – and hasn’t taken him out since then. Coulibaly was convincing – or as sports director Clemens Fritz put it in “Kicker” this week: “He now has twelve Bundesliga games, but sometimes you think he has been playing at this level for five, six, seven years.”
Football teacher Steffen doesn’t see any reason to talk to Coulibaly again about his derby appearance. “As long as things are in flux, I’m less available for one-on-one conversations. I’m happy to let it go that way,” said the coach. “I think he’s shown a lot of resistance to stress during the time he’s been with me and when he’s been a Bundesliga player. And I think he’ll show that in Hamburg too.”
