Nomad Shadow” Premieres at Toronto Film Festival

Eimi Imanishi’s directorial debut explores themes of deportation and identity in Western Sahara.

Teh first look at Eimi Imanishi’s “Nomad Shadow” has been unveiled as the film gears up for its world premiere at the 50th Toronto Film Festival.

The drama centers on a young woman’s challenging return home after being deported from Spain to Western Sahara, the territory she left behind years ago. The protagonist is confronted with rejection from both the cultural environment she once sought to escape and her family members, who harbor resentment over her initial departure. Her attempts to preserve her identity while navigating customary expectations only exacerbate the divide with her past.

Producers Shrihari sathe, Belén Sánchez Silvero, Queralt Pons Serra, Damon Owlia, Jayne Baron Sherman, Virginie Lacombe, and Eric Dupont jointly stated, “We’re thrilled to premiere ‘Nomad Shadow,’ one of the first fiction films set in Western Sahara, at Toronto. At a time when deportations and forced removals are destroying lives worldwide, we’re proud to bring this timely and deeply human story of return out into the world starting with the fantastic audiences in Toronto.”

The Toronto premiere also marks a return for Imanishi, who previously presented her short film “Battalion to My Beat” at the festival in 2016.

Imanishi commented, “It’s wonderful to be back with the festival’s legendary audiences and to be able to fulfill my dream of bringing them to Western Sahara and immersing them in its world as I know it.”

Lead actor Nadhira Mohamed, who stars in the film, draws on her personal experiences, having grown up in Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria‘s Tindouf region. She has dedicated over a decade to social services, currently collaborating with the Spanish Red Cross to support asylum seekers.

“I joined ‘Nomad Shadow’ as it reflects, from a woman’s viewpoint, the journey that many migrants face,” Mohamed said. “This is why I wanted to play this role, it is indeed the story of many people I have met, and continue to meet, every day.”

Mohamed’s prior acting role includes a part in 2011’s “Wilaya,” directed by Pedro Pérez Rosado and produced by José María Morales.
