Niles Embraces its Past: New Book Celebrates City’s History

Niles, Michigan is gearing up to delve into its rich past with an exciting new project: a comprehensive pictorial history book. The Niles City Council recently approved a contract with Arcadia Publishing, a leading publisher of local history books, to bring this project to life.

A Collaborative Effort to Share Local History

Christina Arseneau, Director of the Niles History Center, recognized the opportunity to showcase the city’s captivating story through images. The History Center boasts a vast collection of historical photographs, offering a treasure trove of visuals to bring Niles’ past to life.

Collaborating with Mollie Watson, Arseneau will lead the authorship of the book, aiming to release it as part of Arcadia Publishing’s "Images of America" series by 2026. This popular series features beautifully illustrated books exploring the unique stories of towns and cities across the nation.

Filling a Gap in Niles History

The book promises to fill a void for locals who are eager to explore their city’s historical roots. Arseneau noted that there hasn’t been a comprehensive history book published for Niles in decades.

This new publication will not only revisit past events but will also shed light on previously underrepresented narratives. Arseneau emphasized the importance of including women’s history and African American history, ensuring a more inclusive and complete picture of Niles’ past.

Beyond its historical significance, the book is anticipated to attract a wide audience of history enthusiasts, long-time residents, and newcomers alike. The city’s rich built heritage, visible through its historic buildings and landmarks, fuels a growing interest in uncovering Niles’ captivating story.

Stay Tuned for More

The publication date is set for 2026, providing ample time for anticipation and excitement to build. As the project progresses, we can expect glimpses into the rich tapestry of Niles’ history and the incredible stories woven within its past.
