Following an intense 2023 with two camera launches and nine new lenses, Nikon slowed its pace in 2024 to two new cameras and three lenses. Despite the reduction in product launches, Nikon made significant strides in maintaining and growing its market share in the mirrorless camera era. The acquisition of RED further solidifies Nikon’s position in both photography and video markets.
Two New Cameras with Photo and Video Capabilities
Nikon unveiled the eagerly awaited Z6 Mark III in June. This new camera features a partially stacked 24-megapixel sensor, offering high performance and versatility at a competitive price. While the sensor may not match the Z8 or Z9 in every aspect, its resilience in various applications and speed make it a standout choice for hybrid photographers.
The Z6 III excels as an all-around camera, particularly in challenging conditions. Reviews and reader votes echoing through PetaPixel agree, with Chris Niccolls declaring it “the best all-around full-frame hybrid camera in this price range.” The Nikon Z6 III secured the People’s Choice Award with 21.8% of the vote, leading the way across various models.
Wait was also in place for Nikon’s APS-C mirrorless camera, the Z50 II, announced in early November. Designed to cater to beginners transitioning from smartphones, the Z50 II offers improved video features and robust performance. At $959.95, it remains accessible to a wide audience.
Three New Lenses: A Versatile Zoom and Affordable Fast Primes
Nikon introduced the 28-400mm f/4-8 VR lens, offering 14.2x zoom capabilities and excellent versatility for travel photographers. Despite limitations, particularly its slowest f/8 max aperture, this exceptional lens manages to shine in nearly every use case.
Additionally, Nikon launched two f/1.4 prime lenses: the Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4 and the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4. These affordable lenses are compact and lightweight, designed to fit within every photographer’s budget. Critic Chris Niccolls praised the 50mm f/1.4, particularly favoring it even over the traditionally preferred 35mm lens.

A Bold Acquisition
In a significant move, Nikon acquired American cinema company RED in March. The $85 million acquisition is expected to enhance Nikon’s standing in the video market through the integration of RED’s cutting-edge technology. RED-developed LUTs for Nikon Z cameras already showcase the benefits of this collaboration.

Future Horizon
Looking ahead, Nikon planned the release of its first full-frame video lens, the Nikkor Z 28-135mm f/4 Power Zoom. While the launch date is still uncertain, its development shows Nikon’s commitment to advancing video capabilities.

Conclusion
The launch of the Z6 III, Z50 II, and three lenses alongside the acquisition of RED have all enhanced Nikon’s product lineup and market positioning. While Nikon’s output was more moderate, the quality of its launches and acquisition strategy make for a robust showing. Nikon appears well-prepared for continued growth and innovation, particularly in the video space.
