Nick Schmaltz recorded his second career hat trick and added an assist to lead the Utah Mammoth to a 6-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks in Salt Lake City on Friday night.
Schmaltz scored twice in the first period and then completed his hat trick 54 seconds into the third period with a first-time shot from the front for a 4-2 lead.
Clayton Keller scored a goal and had three assists, and Liam O’Brien and Michael Carcone also scored as Mammoth earned its second straight victory. Karel Vejmelka made 18 saves.
Macklin Celebrini and Jeff Skinner each scored a goal and had an assist, and Tyler Toffoli also scored for the Sharks, who lost their fourth straight game (0-2-2) to start the season. Yaraslov Askarov stopped 28 shots.
Alas Rojas 2, King 1 (OT)
Dylan Larkin’s goal with 1:24 left in overtime gave host Detroit the victory over Tampa Bay.
Axel Sandin-Pellikka scored his first career goal during the first period. Larkin, who assisted on the rookie’s goal in the first period, has contributed at least one point in all five of the Red Wings’ games this season. Detroit’s John Gibson made 31 saves.
The Lightning’s JJ Moser tied the game with 3:43 left in regulation. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 29 shots.
Capitals 5, Savage 1
Dylan Strome had two goals and two assists while Alex Ovechkin scored his 898th career goal and added an assist as Washington won its fourth straight game by defeating visiting Minnesota.
Ovechkin, who assisted on Strome’s goal in the first period, scored his first goal of the season at 1:19 of the third period, putting the Capitals up 3-1. The Capitals also scored a goal each, from Aliaksei Protas and Tom Wilson, outscoring the Wild in field goals 45-14. Logan Thompson stopped 13 shots to take the victory.
Filip Gustavsson stopped 40 shots and Marcus Johansson scored for the Wild, who lost for the third time in five games to open the season.
Canucks 3, Blackhawks 2 (PS)
Brock Boeser scored the only goal in a four-round shootout, giving visiting Vancouver its 11th straight victory over Chicago.
Jake DeBrusk and Max Sasson scored in regulation for the Canucks, who have won the first two outings of a five-game road trip, overcoming 2-0 deficits in both. Kevin Lankinen made 31 saves in overtime and stopped all four Chicago skaters in the shootout.
Ryan Donato and Tyler Bertuzzi scored early for the Blackhawks, whose two-win streak came to an end. Spencer Knight stopped 30 shots before making a stop in the shootout.
