NHL Draft Combine Reveals Team Strategies and Prospect Standouts

The 2025 NHL scouting combine in Buffalo offered a unique glimpse into team strategies ahead of the decentralized draft. With executives missing the usual draft-week dinners and face-to-face meetings, the combine took on added importance for evaluating prospects.

The combine has evolved significantly, now featuring team suites for interviews.Players navigate a series of 15-minute meetings, often described as an “interrogation gauntlet.” This year marked the first chance for many prospects to meet team executives, including general managers and assistant GMs.

Typically, teams invite a select few players to dinner during draft week, focusing on those they are likely to draft. Though, with the decentralized format, teams are adjusting their strategies. For example, Matthew Schaefer, the top-ranked prospect, is unlikely to dine with teams like the Edmonton Oilers or the Colorado Avalanche, focusing rather on the New York Islanders and san Jose Sharks.

Intriguing Team Strategies

The Philadelphia Flyers famously avoided taking Jett Luchanko to dinner last season before drafting him, so as to not raise alarm bells with other teams. More interestingly, the Chicago team with the third overall pick, opted not to take any players to dinner, sparking speculation about their plans. This could indicate a strategy to invite players to Chicago or visit their hometowns, similar to tactics employed by other teams in the past.

James Hagens, a highly touted prospect, dined with the Utah Mammoth and interviewed with 16 teams. If Hagens falls in the draft, a team might trade up to acquire him. Hagens expressed his desire to win a Stanley Cup with the Islanders.

Prospects Drawing Interest

The Flyers are evaluating several prospects, including Jake O’Brien, Brady Martin, and Porter Martone, with a focus on addressing their need for a centre. They also showed interest in goalies like Joshua Ravensbergen, Jack Ivankovic, Alexei Medvedev and Semyon Frolov, possibly using one of their three first-round picks to secure a goalie.

The Canucks, without GM Patrik Allvin present, are reportedly considering trading their 15th overall pick to acquire a center. Similarly,the Columbus Blue Jackets are exploring options to trade draft capital for immediate roster improvements.

brady Martin’s draft stock is on the rise, drawing comparisons to Sam Bennett. Martin, who may miss the draft due to farm work, models his game after Bennett, Matthew knies and Tom Wilson. He is projected to be a top-10 pick, potentially influencing the availability of other prospects.
