The Dawn of the F-47: Replacing the Raptor
in a landmark announcement on March 21, 2025, the U.S. Air Force, with President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth present, officially awarded Boeing the contract for the highly anticipated Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program [[2]]. This initiative aims to develop the F-47, a sixth-generation fighter jet poised to supersede the Lockheed Martin F-22 raptor, currently a cornerstone of U.S. air superiority [[1]].
The NGAD platform is envisioned as the central node in a broader “Family of Systems,” promising advancements in range, survivability, lethality, and adaptability [[1]].
NGAD Competition: Boeing Emerges Victorious
The NGAD program initially saw fierce competition among three defense giants: Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman. However, Northrop Grumman withdrew from the NGAD race in 2023, shifting its focus to the U.S. Navy’s F/A-XX program, setting the stage for a final showdown between Boeing and Lockheed martin.
Secret Prototypes: The NGAD-X Demonstrators
Adding an intriguing layer to the NGAD narrative, Air Force Chief of Staff General David Allvin revealed that both Boeing and lockheed martin had been secretly developing technology demonstrator aircraft. These prototypes, reportedly designated “NGAD-X,” took to the skies in 2019 and 2022, accumulating hundreds of flight hours. These tests aimed to validate cutting-edge concepts and push the boundaries of existing aerospace technology.
The aircraft have flown for hundreds of hours, testing the latest concepts, and prove it can exceed the existing technological limits.

Despite General Allvin’s revelations, both boeing and Lockheed Martin have remained tight-lipped, neither confirming nor denying the existence of the NGAD-X demonstrators. This shroud of secrecy echoes the early days of the Lockheed Martin F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, whose development was preceded by the “Have Blue” technology demonstrator, the existence of which was only revealed after the F-117 entered service.
Implications for Global Air power
The NGAD program represents a critical investment in maintaining U.S. air superiority in an increasingly contested global landscape. The F-47 is expected to incorporate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, directed energy weapons, and advanced stealth capabilities. If claims regarding the NGAD-X demonstrator technology are accurate, the U.S. may hold a developmental lead over competing sixth-generation fighter programs, such as China’s chengdu J-36 and Shenyang J-50, which reportedly began prototype testing in late December 2024.
