Enhanced Replay Assist: Targeting Face Masks and More
One of the most discussed changes involves expanding replay assist to cover specific penalties, particularly face mask infractions. Missed calls on face masks, which could result in serious injuries, have plagued the league this season, drawing criticism from fans and commentators alike.
NFL executive Troy Vincent acknowledged these concerns, stating, "When we see it, because I see it like yourselves and the fans, I have an opportunity to see it from a different angle and see it from a slo-mo… That’s why we would like to consider putting that foul category that we can see, putting that [penalty flag] on the field to help."
Beyond face masks, the league is considering extending replay assist to other areas like hits on defenseless players, tripping, fair catches, illegal batted balls, and illegal double-team blocks.
Eliminating Low Blocks: A Priority for Player Safety
Eliminating low blocks, particularly those below the knee, is a key focus for the NFL. Vincent emphasized this clearly, stating "The low block below the knee needs to be removed from the game…Every block should be above the knee and below the neck.”
This move aligns with a growing emphasis on player safety, with the league already taking steps to minimize head and neck injuries.
Rethinking the Onside Kick: A "Ceremonial Play"
The NFL is also taking a hard look at the onside kick, acknowledging its low success rate and the lack of excitement it generates. Vincent described it as a "dead play" and a "ceremonial play," hinting at potential replacements like a one-play option for possession.
