Amber DeWitt’s Terrifying Postpartum Battle: How She Defied the Odds
The Near-Death Experience of a New Mom
Amber DeWitt, a business manager from Dallas, is sharing a harrowing story of a nearly fatal postpartum experience with necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating bug. She developed the condition from a C-section incision, which eventually landed her in a coma and fighting for her life.
In her words, “I couldn’t go to the toilet, and I developed a high temperature. They suspected the infection and sent me home with antibiotics. Eventually, it became unbearable. When I went to the hospital, I was rushed in for emergency exploratory surgery and discovered I had developed sepsis and necrotizing fasciitis.”
An Emergency C-section
Amber, who intended to have a water birth, ended up in an emergency C-section after her son became stuck in the breach position. Fortunately, Weston was delivered safely, weighing 6lbs 11oz, but Amber’s health soon took a severe turn for the worse.
Her surgeon performed emergency exploratory surgery, cutting away pounds of rotting flesh. Despite being told she wouldn’t survive, Amber managed to overcome her condition, thanks to her indomitable will and a fortunate outcome that defied expectations.
A affer Recovery
It took Amber six surgeries and several weeks of recovery to make a full recovery. However, she has left with a large scar on her abdomen. Her hospital costs approached nearly a million dollars, and she obtained Medicaid to cover the expenses retroactively.
Amber warns, “I almost died because I put off going to the hospital. Your health is not worth worrying about getting a hospital bill. I nearly lost my life.”
A Mission to Urge Others to Be Careful
Today, Amber is urging other people to “listen to their bodies if something doesn’t seem right.” She attended the local clinic where doctors dismissed her concerns as a mild bacterial infection, contributing to her condition worsening before being re-diagnosed.
“I nearly died and would never have been here for my son. In that sense, I’m lucky to be here,” Amber asserts, expressing gratitude for the support she received during her recovery.
