A new drug called Baxdrostat is demonstrating significant potential in reducing blood pressure, particularly for individuals whose blood pressure remains dangerously high despite the use of multiple existing medications.
The research, conducted by scientists at the University of London, UK, was presented on August 30th at the European Society for Cardiology conference in MADRID.
professor Brian Williams of the Institute of Cardiovascular Science at the University of London led the trial, which was sponsored by AstraZeneca. The study involved approximately 800 patients across 214 clinics globally, evaluating Baxdrostat in tablet form.
The study revealed that after 12 weeks, patients taking Baxdrostat (1 mg or 2 mg daily) experienced a blood pressure decrease of about 9-10 mm Hg compared to those on a placebo. This reduction is considered sufficient to lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Approximately 40% of patients on Baxdrostat achieved healthy blood pressure levels, compared to less than 20% in the placebo group.

“The achievement of a decrease of approximately 10 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure using puscordos is interesting, as this level of decrease is associated with a significant decrease in the risk of heart attacks, strokes, heart failure and kidney disease.”

How Does Baxdrostat Work?
Globally, around 1.3 billion individuals suffer from hypertension, with approximately half experiencing uncontrolled or treatment-resistant conditions, considerably increasing their risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and premature death.
Blood pressure is significantly influenced by aldosterone, a hormone that aids the kidneys in regulating salt and water balance. Some individuals produce excessive aldosterone, leading to salt and water retention and, consequently, high blood pressure that is tough to manage.
The European Assembly for high blood pressure for 2024 recommended targeted blood pressure less than 130/80 mm Hg, and before 2024 the target was 140/90 mm Hg.
Addressing aldosterone dysregulation has been a major focus of research for decades, with recent breakthroughs finally offering potential solutions.
Baxdrostat functions by directly inhibiting aldosterone production, thereby addressing a key factor contributing to high blood pressure.
Studies have shown that adding 1 mg or 2 mg of Baxdrostat daily to existing hypertension treatments results in noticeable reductions in systolic blood pressure, sustained for up to 32 weeks, without unexpected safety concerns.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hypertension
- What is considered high blood pressure?
- High blood pressure is typically defined as a reading of 130/80 mm Hg or higher. American Heart Association Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
- What are the risk factors for hypertension?
- Risk factors include age, family history, obesity, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption. American Heart Association World Health Organization
- How can I lower my blood pressure naturally?
- Lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet, reducing sodium intake, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol consumption can help lower blood pressure. American Heart association Mayo Clinic
- What is the role of aldosterone in blood pressure regulation?
- Aldosterone is a hormone that helps regulate sodium and potassium levels in the body, which affects blood volume and blood pressure. High levels of aldosterone can lead to increased blood pressure. National Institutes of Health Mayo Clinic
- How does Baxdrostat differ from othre hypertension medications?
- Baxdrostat works by directly inhibiting the production of aldosterone, addressing a key hormonal factor contributing to high blood pressure, while many other medications focus on different mechanisms such as vasodilation or reducing blood volume.
