Charlotte, NC.- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CMS) schools officially presented Jonathan D. Thomas as their new police chief during a swear ceremony held at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. The activity brought together authorities, representatives of the Board of Education and members of the community, who accompanied the new leader at this key moment of his career.
Chief Thomas, born in North Carolina, began his career in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) in 1998. Since then he built a solid profile that combines academic training and land experience. He studied criminal justice at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte and subsequently obtained a master’s degree in Business Administration at the Pfeiffer University. He also added a master’s degree in administration of order forces at the University of Virginia and completed the prestigious program of the National FBI Academy.

For more than two decades, Thomas led teams in different areas, with special emphasis on special operations and emergency management. His performance was fundamental in the planning of high -range national events and in the coordination of the teams deployed in the west of the state after the devastating passage of Hurricane Helene.
When assuming this new role, Thomas stressed the importance of strengthening confidence between schools and the community. He expressed his commitment to the safety of students, educators and all CMS staff, as well as with the creation of a school environment where prevention and closeness with families prevail.
The swear ceremony was held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, between 1:00 and 2:00 in the afternoon, in room 267 of the local government building. The event reaffirmed the vision of the school district to consolidate a police leadership that combines preparation, response capacity and sensitivity towards the needs of each educational community.

CMS invited the media to cover the act and announced the availability of the new police chief for interviews under prior request. With this designation, the school district reinforces its commitment to integral security in an educational system that impacts thousands of students and families in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
