The agreement was made official this Friday: Netflix is going to buy Warner Bros. in a movement valued at 72 billion dollars. A movement that is going to shake the foundations of the audiovisual industry, and that will alsodirectly affects the video game sector.
Because, as Game Developer has been able to confirm after contacting representatives of Warner Bros., “the recently structured game division [de WB]… will join Netflix“. The streaming giant will now own the following studios:
- Rocksteady – Study of the Batman: Arkham games.
- NetherRealm Studios – Study of Mortal Kombat games.
- TT Games – Study of LEGO games.
- Portkey Games – Study of Harry Potter games for mobile phones and support on consoles.
- Avalanche Software – Study of Hogwarts Legacy.
- Warner Bros. Games Boston, Montréal, New York y San Francisco.
The transition will require a time of between 12 and 18 months. Furthermore, now we have to face the legal part and that the regulatory bodies intervene to find out if such a movement is viable or can lead to monopolistic practices. Just as it happened with Microsoft and the purchase of Activision Blizzard.
Be that as it may, it is going to be a gigantic change for the entertainment industry and, of course, will have consequences for video games. Will it be part of Netflix’s strategy to increase subscribers? Will you include future games on your platform?
