Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepted the invitation to join the Peace Board established by US President Donald Trump, which will oversee the development of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, even though its statutes do not appear to limit its functions to the Palestinian territory. This was reported this Wednesday (01/21/2026) by the Hebrew leader’s office.
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he accepted the invitation of US President Donald Trump and will join as a member of the Supreme Peace Council, which will be composed of world leaders,” a statement said. Dozens of countries and leaders have claimed to have received an invitation, including close allies of the United States, but also adversaries.
In this way, Netanyahu will become, after more than two years of offensive and still maintaining troops and occupied territory in Gaza, part of the body in charge, according to the description of the White House, of “providing strategic supervision, mobilizing international resources and guaranteeing accountability as Gaza moves from conflict to peace and development.”
French rejection
Other leaders such as the president of Argentina, Javier Milei; that of Paraguay, Santiago Peña; and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan, had already confirmed having received a letter from Trump to join. On Monday, the Kremlin confirmed, in turn, that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had “received through diplomatic channels the proposal to join the Peace Board,” according to Russian spokesman Dmitri Peskov.
Meanwhile, sources close to the French president, Emmanuel Macron, assured that France has rejected membership, considering that the current proposal goes beyond the situation in Gaza and raises questions “about respect for the principles and structure of the United Nations that cannot be questioned.” Norway also expressed its rejection of the invitation.
