The No. 5 Nebraska men’s basketball team hit the road for a Tuesday night showdown with the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines. The Huskers came off a 76-57 win at Minnesota, while the Wolverines defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 74-62 last Friday.
Nebraska suffered its first loss of the season in Ann Arbor, dropping a 75-72 game after spending most of the night with the lead. The Huskers held an 11-point lead partway through the first and held Michigan to 6-of-24 from the floor in the second half. But Nebraska coughed up 19 fouls, allowing for the Wolverines to shoot 19-of-23 from the foul line.
The Huskers finished just 3-of-4 from the free throw line. This, along with Nebraska’s second-half struggles on offense, led to Michigan grabbing the lead late. The Huskers only shot 10-of-31 from the floor in the second half and just 1-of-13 from beyond the arc. Nebraska finished the night 29-of-63 and 11-of-32, respectively.
Jamarques Lawrence and Pryce Sandfort combined for 40 points in the loss, 30 of which came in the opening half. The duo tallied 14 total shots and 11 three-pointers. Lawrence shot 8-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Sandfort hit all of Nebraska’s free throws and finished 6-of-18 from the floor and 5-of-16 from three-point range. Sam Hoiberg scored 13 points for the Huskers, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor and led the team in rebounds with seven.
The Huskers return home for their next game, starting February against No. 10 Illinois for a rematch of their December battle. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. CT on Sunday on FS1.
