Nebraska Volleyball Ends 11-Year Drought in Madison: Huskers Sweep No. 7 Wisconsin
Nebraska Breaks 11-Year Streak Against Wisconsin
Last year, Nebraska volleyball ended a 10-match losing streak to Wisconsin. On Friday, the Huskers made history by ending an 11-year drought in Madison. No. 2 Nebraska swept No. 7 Wisconsin at the UW Field House, winning in three straight sets with scores of 25-21, 25-22, and 25-19.
Nebraska Regains Form and Home Advantage
The Nebraska win marks the end of a 25-match home winning streak for the Badgers since 2013. This victory aids Nebraska in cementing their progress and dominance in the volleyball season thus far. With this win, Nebraska improves their season standings to 21-1 overall and maintain a perpetual dominance of 11-0 in Big Ten Conference play.
Key Performances in Friday’s Match
Nebraska’s Momentum All-Night Long
NU hit .202 for the match while holding UW to just .094, a low output not seen since 2016. The Nebraska defense was notably stiff, racking up 10 blocks and stifling reigning national player of the year Sarah Franklin’s offense.
Defensive Powerhouse
Rebekah Allick stood out with a match-high seven blocks, complementing kills and additional defensive contribution to the victory. Meanwhile, Über-athlete Anna Smrek, while tallying minimal negative points, demonstrated defensive prowess beyond typical configurations.
Offensive Finesse
While Taylor Landfair led the team in kills with 13 as the high-scoring player within the lineup, Merritt Beason anchored the team with strong hitting at a .391 clip. COVID-19 survivor accomplice, Bergen Reilly, dished out a valuable assist load counting to 32 for the evening. The Nebraska serve remained remarkably resilient, featuring five consecutive aces involving Lexi Rodriguez, Kennedi Orr, and Olivia Mauch.
