The latest sensation in the Chinese film industry is “Ne Zha 2,” an animated film that blends elements of Chinese mythology and a renowned 16th-century novel. Just two weeks post-release, “Ne Zha 2” has clinched the top spot as China’s highest-grossing movie, generating more than $1 billion in ticket sales. This achievement is particularly notable as it marks the first time a domestically produced film has surpassed the billion-dollar milestone, marking a significant shift from the previous reign of Hollywood blockbusters.

“Ne Zha 2” continues the story of Nezha, a resilient and magical child viewed as destined to die young but instead fights against his destiny and saves his village. The sequel delves deeper into Nezha’s journey, challenging established authority and authority figures among gods and demons. This thematic thread resonates strongly with its audience.

According to Maoyan, a Chinese entertainment data provider, the film has garnered $1.2 billion in box office revenues since its release on January 29, 2025, during the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday. Its performance exceeds double that of the highest-grossing film of 2024, propelled by its wide appeal. Notably, the film is set for release in North America on February 16, 2025.

Chinese state media and Communist Party officials have hailed the film’s success as a testament to the country’s cultural influence. The Global Times, a Communist Party tabloid, highlighted how Chinese culture is evolving through innovation, showcasing its unique qualities.

China Daily, a state-owned newspaper, endorsed the film as a symbol of China’s growing cultural confidence. The essay posited that “Ne Zha 2” defies reliance on Western studios for storytelling, asserting that no entity can recount China’s myths better than the country itself. Other cultural phenomena, such as the video game Black Myth: Wukong, have also gained popularity by drawing inspiration from classical Chinese literature.

The broader Chinese film industry has faced challenges in recent years. Box office revenues dropped by 23% in 2024, according to the China Film Administration. However, “Ne Zha 2” offers a ray of hope, attributed in part to China’s efforts to stimulate consumer spending and revitalize its economy.

To boost movie-goers’ interest, the government extended the Lunar New Year holiday by an extra day, which provided additional viewing opportunities. Movie ticket discounts, subsidies, and other incentives were also introduced.

Nevertheless, the film critic Raymond Zhou suggested these incentives contributed little to the film’s success. He emphasized that the franchise’s appeal lies in its innovative take on traditional tales, resonating with younger audiences.

Historically, Chinese audiences have been a critical revenue stream for Hollywood blockbusters. During 2024, only “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire” managed to rank in the top 10 of China’s box office, placing ninth. No American film made the top 10 chart in 2023.

Hu Xijin, a former editor-in-chief of the Global Times, acknowledged the benefits of China’s early collaboration with Hollywood films, starting in the 1990s. However, he now believes the country is well-positioned to compete independently.

“This is the best Chinese animation I’ve ever seen,” Hu wrote on Weibo, a social media platform. “The era when Chinese people looked up to Hollywood cartoons like ‘Kung Fu Panda’ and marveled at them is over.”
