Expanding Lawsuit Against Cryptocurrency Firms
New York Attorney General Letitia James made headlines by announcing the expansion of her lawsuit against cryptocurrency firms, including Gemini, Genesis Global Capital, and Digital Currency Group (DCG). The lawsuit now totals $3 billion, tripling the initial fraud claims against these entities.
In October, James filed a $1.1 billion lawsuit against these companies, citing alleged investor fraud. Since then, more victims have come forward, prompting the lawsuit’s expansion.
Allegations of Deception
The lawsuit alleges that Gemini, founded by the Winklevoss twins, misled investors by falsely assuring them of the safety of their investments in the Gemini Earn program, operated in conjunction with Genesis. However, it was revealed that Genesis’ loans were risky and heavily tied to FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried’s crypto hedge fund, a fact allegedly concealed by Gemini.
Former Genesis CEO Soichiro Moro and DCG founder and CEO Barry Silbert were also implicated in the lawsuit, highlighting the extent of the alleged deception.
Call for Stronger Regulations
Attorney General James emphasized the need for stricter cryptocurrency regulations to safeguard investors from such fraudulent schemes.
