LONDON – Danish Prime Minister (PM) Mette Frederiksen expressed anger towards NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte after the allied boss negotiated with United States (US) President Donald Trump regarding the fate of Greenland. Frederiksen emphasized that Greenland’s sovereignty is non-negotiable.

“As far as I understand, NATO and the US President (Donald Trump) have talked about increasing NATO involvement in the north and the Arctic,” Frederiksen told Danish media after his meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Checkers, Starmer’s official residence in Buckinghamshire, on Thursday.

“We are happy with that. It is something we have asked for from the Danish side,” he said, according to a Danish television broadcast. DR.

However, he reiterated that NATO cannot negotiate on behalf of Denmark and Greenland. “[NATO] has no mandate to negotiate on behalf of Denmark and Greenland about our relations,” Frederiksen said.

His remarks came after NATO boss Mark Rutte and Trump met on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, amid tensions between allies in Europe and the US over Trump’s efforts to acquire Greenland.

Trump announced shortly after the meeting that a framework for a potential deal involving Greenland and the wider Arctic region had been established.

Frederiksen noted that, as he understands it, NATO and Trump have talked about increasing NATO involvement in the Arctic and in the Arctic region.
