NATO Crisis: US-Iran Conflict & Alliance Fallout

by Archynetys World Desk

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Two leaders of NATO countries, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, agreed to condemn the United States (US) for its military attacks in the Middle East. This critical attitude came from two leaders of NATO member countries following US military operations with Israel in Iranian territory.

Macron insisted on Tuesday that the US and Israel’s decision to launch a military operation against Iran was carried out “outside international law” and could not be approved by France. “The United States and Israel decided to launch a military operation, carried out outside international law, which we cannot agree to,” Macron was quoted as saying AFPWednesday (4/3/2026).

However, Macron also blamed Tehran as the main party responsible for the situation. He highlighted Iran’s nuclear program which was considered dangerous, its support for regional proxies, and its repressive actions against its own citizens during the wave of protests in January.

Carney struck a similar note a day later. Speaking in Sydney, he called for a “rapid de-escalation” of the conflict triggered by the US-Israel attack on Iran and urged all parties to respect international rules of engagement.

“Canada calls for a rapid de-escalation of hostilities and stands ready to help achieve this goal,” Carney said, adding that “Canada reaffirms that international law is binding on all belligerents.”

Carney called the wars in the Middle East “another example of the failure of the international order.” Despite supporting the US-Israel strike on the grounds that Iran has failed to dismantle its nuclear program and stop supporting militant groups, Carney expressed regret over the failure of international efforts.

However, he also criticized Washington and Tel Aviv’s decision-making processes. “The United States and Israel have acted without involving the United Nations or consulting with allies, including Canada,” he said.

The escalation of the regional conflict increased after the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran which killed the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran then responded with attacks on various strategic targets in the region, including military bases and vital infrastructure such as data centers and oil and gas facilities.

The impact of the conflict also rocked global markets. Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz triggered a surge in oil prices and pressure on world financial markets, with US, European and Asian stock exchanges weakening as concerns grew about disruptions to global energy supplies.

Trump Threatens Spain & Slams Britain

President Donald Trump threatened to cut off all trade with Spain after the country refused to allow US planes to use their bases to attack Iran. He also criticized Britain for not being more cooperative.

Spain’s left-wing government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has said that bases long used by US forces can only be permitted for activities in accordance with the UN Charter. Sanchez is known as one of the European leaders most opposed to Trump.
