NASCAR officials have announced that they are taking a closer look at the events that unfolded in the final stages of the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway, making it a focal point for an in-depth investigation.

Ross Chastain (No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet), Austin Dillon (No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet), and Bubba Wallace (No. 23 Toyota 23XI Racing) are among the drivers being investigated.

Their actions in the closing laps of Sunday’s 500-lap race have raised several eyebrows. Specifically, the role each played in blocking movement and strategic racing in the critical moments leading up to the conclusion of the event.

What NASCAR is Looking Into

NASCAR’s senior vice president of competition, Elton Sawyer, said Sunday that officials immediately focused mainly on Christopher Bell’s wall-ride maneuver. However, a deeper analysis will be undertaken once the dust settles.

“We’ll look at everything,” said Sawyer. “As I said earlier, we want to go back, as we would have done anyway. We’ll get back, we’ll take all the data, video. We’ll listen to in-car audio. We’ll do all that, as we would any event.”

William Byron found himself leading by far before dramatically dropping to sixth place, bringing him dangerously close to the elimination line.

With more focus on survival due to the playoff implications, drivers like Ross Chastain and Austin Dillon chose to drive side by side with Byron. This maneuver potentially cost him his spot in the Championship 4.

Meanwhile, Bubba Wallace saw his speed significantly reduced in the final five laps, ultimately being lapped by race leader Ryan Blaney on the final lap.
