NASCAR Investigation: Races Not Done Cleanly During Xfinity 500 Finale

NASCAR officials have announced that they are taking a closer look at the events that unfolded in the final stages of the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway, making it a focal point for an in-depth investigation.

The Scrutinized Drivers

Ross Chastain (No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet), Austin Dillon (No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet), and Bubba Wallace (No. 23 Toyota 23XI Racing) are among the drivers being investigated.

Their actions in the closing laps of Sunday’s 500-lap race have raised several eyebrows. Specifically, the role each played in blocking movement and strategic racing in the critical moments leading up to the conclusion of the event.

What NASCAR is Looking Into

NASCAR’s senior vice president of competition, Elton Sawyer, said Sunday that officials immediately focused mainly on Christopher Bell’s wall-ride maneuver. However, a deeper analysis will be undertaken once the dust settles.

“We’ll look at everything,” said Sawyer. “As I said earlier, we want to go back, as we would have done anyway. We’ll get back, we’ll take all the data, video. We’ll listen to in-car audio. We’ll do all that, as we would any event.”

The Incident with William Byron

William Byron found himself leading by far before dramatically dropping to sixth place, bringing him dangerously close to the elimination line.

With more focus on survival due to the playoff implications, drivers like Ross Chastain and Austin Dillon chose to drive side by side with Byron. This maneuver potentially cost him his spot in the Championship 4.

Bubba Wallace’s Role

Meanwhile, Bubba Wallace saw his speed significantly reduced in the final five laps, ultimately being lapped by race leader Ryan Blaney on the final lap.

As Wallace slowed his pace, Christopher Bell capitalized, completing his move past the slowing Toyota and riding along the outside retaining wall towards the checkered flag.

The Penalties and Reassessment

Bell’s controversial maneuver over the wall eventually led to penalties, placing him twelve spots lower after a review and reevaluation.

With Bell moved to 22nd place due to safety violations and tire penalties, William Byron was able to retain his spot in the Championship 4.

Next Steps in the NASCAR Calendar

The investigation is crucial as NASCAU Cup Series returns to action in its Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday (3 p.m. ET).

The upcoming race brings with it high tensions and strategic manoeuvres as the competitors aim to cement their position in the racing standings.
