NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has captured high-resolution images of an ancient river system in the Aeolis Planum region, showing ancient Martian terrain.
The images show hill formations indicating ancient river courses and the phenomenon of inverted channels, revealing ancient Martian surface features.
As of July 2023, MRO has contributed more than 450 terabytes of data, discovering geological features such as glaciers and chloride deposits that indicate the presence of ancient lakes.
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), part of the agency’s Mars Exploration Programme NASA, captured high-resolution images of an ancient river system located in the Aeolis Planum region on the Red Planet. These stunning images reveal terrain that resembles what Mars might have been like in the past, which is very different from the dry and barren state we see today.
The MRO rover flies between 250 and 316 kilometers above the surface of Mars, allowing it to observe extremely fine details on the planet’s surface.
The pictures taken show hill formations that clearly show the paths of ancient rivers, which were filled with gravel at the bottom, while the surrounding areas were formed of soft clay as a result of the floods of these rivers.
