Democrats See Hope in Senior Early Voting Trends
The Partisan Gap Shrinks in Early Voting
The partisan gap in views on early voting has narrowed since 2020, as Republicans see their efforts to encourage early voting bearing fruit. However, Democrats hold a significant advantage in early votes from older voters, according to Tom Bonier of TargetSmart, a Democratic strategist and CEO of the data firm.
Republicans Quadruple Their Election Day Efforts
Roughly 35 percent of Republicans who have cast ballots so far in Pennsylvania are voters who cast ballots on Election Day in 2020. This indicates that Republicans are Triple early voting efforts are showing promising results, narrowing the partisan gap significantly since 2020.
Democrats and Older Voters Surge in Early Voting
Meanwhile, Democrats have seen a “silver surge” in early voting from older voters, with Black voters over the age of 65 returning ballots at a higher rate than any other demographic group. Pennsylvania, a key battleground state, has seen Democrats hold only a 25-point advantage over Republicans in early voting ballots, compared to a 49-point lead in 2020.
Senior Voters Key Opportunity for Democrats
Senior voters, who are particularly important in several pivotal states, are showing high mobilization rates in the early vote. According to Bob Ward, a partner at Fabrizio Ward and a poling contractor for AARP, seniors are the most motivated to vote due to their layered interests in Medicare, Social Security, the economy, and government programs.
Both Campaigns Focus on Senior Votes
Both Biden and Trump are investing heavily in courting senior voters, with Biden focusing on threats to democracy and reproductive rights, and Trump emphasizing immigration and border security, tax breaks for caregivers, and elimination of the taxation of Social Security benefits.
Early Voting Trends and Election Day Implications
The trends in early voting in key states suggest a polarization of vote timing, with early votes leaning Republican and Election Day votes leaning Democratic. However, the political landscape is fluid, and both the early vote surge and Election Day dynamics can influence the overall election results.
