My Ugly Clementine Live: Indie Pop in Vienna | Concert Review

Published concerts are mostly painful and annoying for the band and fans, but in this case a win-win situation for both. The concert of the Austrian Supergroup My Ugly Clementine, which was postponed in September 2024 due to the weather, emerged about 9 months later, the greatest appearance of her career. In summer temperatures in the Arena Vienna, which is due to the Vienna Event Act, which is in force on July 1- just like other locations over 30 years old- under special protection against new residents, thousands of indie and alternative freaks gathered in June to listen to the casual sound of this open-air event. “There are almost only flintas on stage”, that is, women, lesbians, inter*, non-binaries, trans* and agendas, such as the two front women of the “Cousines Like Shit”, Hannah and Laura Breitfuss, who heated up the mood with their queer avant-trash and underground hits like “Barbie”. The newcomer Philine Sonny, who came near Bochum, was flown in from Germany, who reduced the pace of chilly with American indie folk ballads.

The headliners of the evening, My Ugly Clementine, who – after the drummer and hip Hopper Kem Kolleritsch (Aka Kerosin95) – are only on the stage. At least among the vocals that avant-garde musician Mira Lu Kovacs, electronics producer Sophie Lindinger (UA at Leyya) and Nastasja Ronck share. The sound: Alternative rock with the bandwidth from the 70s to the nineties, Kovacs likes to compare the band with the three-sister band Haim from Los Angeles and is actually quite right. Maybe with a little more feminism and empowerment.

My Ugly Clementine has currently released two albums, the “Vitamin C” and “The Good Life“, which falls into Corona period in 2020, the latter a musical sign against the optimization of our society. Through numerous appearances nationally and internationally (UA at the Reeperbahn Festival, Primavera Barcelona or the Eurosonic), the three have already earned a loyal fan base. With tracks such as your first single hit “Never be yours”, “Playground” or “Are You in”, not only is dancing, but also singing along, and particularly enthusiastically at such a nice evening shortly before the official start of the summer.

As a special highlight, My Ugly Clementine invited some scene friends to a guest appearance, including Mavi Phoenix (to the mood bang “I got my feet up (Ah-Ya-yaa)) and the anchor Koi, which is notorious as excessive ramplady. In the rocky burner” No “, the stage trembles against racism and sexism. A new song on the setlist: “Pretender” with a tangible criticism of men who only pretend feminist values. The final in the almost sold out Viennese arena belongs to the fan favourite “The Good the Bad the Ugly”. A strong sign of life of the trio infernale …
