Music Therapy: Benefits & Treatment Support

by Archynetys Entertainment Desk

Music to support medicine. Music therapy is a therapeutic discipline that uses music as a tool to improve health physical, emotional, relational health and cognitive. It is a personally enriching experience that is part of occupational therapy, the rehabilitative health profession that promotes health and well-being through occupation. furthermore, music therapy administered during surgery significantly reduces the amount of anesthetic necessary, such as propofol and fentanyl, during laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia. This was revealed by a study led by Tanvi Goel, of the Lok Nayak Hospital and Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, India, reported in Music and Medicine. Patients exposed to music also reported smoother awakening and a reduced physiological stress response, as measured by perioperative cortisol levels. These results suggest that the sound environment during the intervention can positively influence the post-operative outcomes. For the study, researchers compared a group of patients in a surgical setting who were given it musica of their liking during the intervention and a control group without musical stimulus. The researchers then measured the amount of anesthetic used, i awakening times and cortisol levels.

Music as a cure

The results showed less use of anesthetics in patients exposed to music during surgery; a smoother awakening from anesthesia and lower cortisol levels in patients who had been given music, compared to control group. The researchers describe the effect as a supplement to anesthesia that improves the patient experience and some markers of stress. Intraoperative music therapy could become a standard complement to anesthesia, helping to reduce drug intake and potentially improving recovery. Among the scientists’ future prospects is to extend the research to other types of surgery and define standardized musical protocols based on patient preferences and clinical objectives. Music during surgery could represent a useful non-pharmacological intervention to reduce addiction to anestheticsimprove the patient experience and reduce stress due to the procedure. Further research will be helpful in standardizing the clinical use of intraoperative music therapy.
