A social media post complaining about the cost of coffee and cake at “Woerner’s” café on Marienplatz has triggered a heated discussion about Munich’s high prices. The original poster shared his surprise at being charged 7.40 euros for a mini strawberry cake.
The customer’s Facebook post on May 21 began by stating,”Today I met a friend at Marienplatz and ordered coffee and cake in the Café Woerner’s.” He expressed astonishment at the bill, particularly the price of the cake.According to the post, when he “nicely talked about it” with the waitress, she responded, “Young man, they are at Marienplatz, that’s how the prices are here.” The post concluded with shocked emojis and a request for opinions.
A photo of the bill showed a total of 27.10 euros for two coffees, two cakes, and a portion of cream. the cream, priced at 1.20 euros, drew particular attention. One commenter wrote, “I find it outrageous, also 1.20 for once cream and 6.00 for a coffee is abnormal,” while another observed, “People seem to have enough money.”
Facebook Discussion Focuses on Munich’s High Rents
The Facebook community responded with varied opinions. Many expressed shock at the prices. One comment read,”Grid! Then you don’t go there anymore !! Entirely the prices,” while another stated,”This is violent. Thanks for the info or warning.”
“Young man, they are at Marienplatz, that’s how the prices are here.”
Others attempted to explain the high costs. “The market determines the price,” one person wrote, adding, “the main problem in Munich is the horrendous rents!” Some comments also mentioned personnel costs. However, not everyone agreed, with one person stating, “The consumer also has immense costs,” noting that Munich residents also face high rents. Another commenter pointed out, “The prices rise, but wages if, only minimal.”
One commenter shared their experience in Paris, where a coffee near the Eiffel Tower cost 16 euros a decade ago, adding, “Nowadays it definitely costs 20 or more. You do that once and never again.”
Some commenters suggested that the issue lies in consumers’ willingness to pay the prices. One person explained, “If people no longer pay for it, the” Zack “shop is closed. And with A little brain, you don’t go in there.” Another responded, “And then the store is empty, is that better?”, referencing the recent closure of the council cellar under the new town hall.
Customer Claims Misleading Prices at “woerner’s”
Some commenters were unsympathetic to the complaint.”Yes, the waiter is right and you are in the wrong city if these prices are surprised at Marienplatz,” one person wrote. Another stated, “Whoever pays for this is to blame, sorry.” The original poster responded, “You are right, but there were othre prices at the shop window, probably to take away, not in the café.”
The café “Woerner’s” declined to comment. It remains unconfirmed whether the prices displayed in the shop window were inaccurate. The debate highlights the ongoing discussion about the cost of living in Munich. As one commenter succinctly put it: “Yes, Munich is expensive.”
