A major winter storm is moving through Mississippi today bringing freezing rain, sleet and snow and forecasters are now predicting Jackson will experience some of the wintry mix. The system will also usher in Arctic air and parts of Mississippi are expected to experience sub-zero temperatures early next week.
According to the National Weather Service, precipitation is currently impacting parts of the Mississippi Delta and North Mississippi as the storm moves in from the west. As the storm progresses, the National Weather Service warns of numerous extended power outages and hazardous, if not impassible roads in the areas most heavily affected.
As of 7:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, the Mississippi Department of Transportation reported there were 25 counties in North Mississippi with ice on roads and bridges.
According to the National Weather Service, today is the first of two waves of significant precipitation in Mississippi. The second wave is expected to move in overnight and into Sunday afternoon.
The winter storm will move from northwestern Mississippi to the southeast through the weekend with the most significant impacts occurring along the Natchez Trace corridor and north.
The area expected to see ice accumulations has now been extended to include Jackson. According to the National Weather Service forecast, Jackson will have showers today followed by showers and possible thunderstorms. On Sunday, Jackson is expected to see a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow with accumulation of .1-.3 inches of ice and less than .5 inches of snow and sleet.
Following the storm will be brutally cold low temperatures and highs below freezing in some areas. The lowest temperatures are expected Tuesday morning.
