The National Health Safety Agency (ANSES) recommends getting moving three to five minutes after 30 minutes sitting to limit the harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
The French spend on average seven hours a day sitting, according to ANSES. In front of a computer screen, at work, at school or in front of the television, a sedentary lifestyle is a big habit. In a new report published on Wednesday October 8 and relayed by 20 Minutes, the government agency warns of the importance of walking regularly. She recommends walking three to five minutes after 30 minutes of sitting. This is a step further than the advice from Public Health France, which invited people to move every two hours.
“Walking five minutes every 30 minutes, with a low to moderate intensity, improves metabolic parameters, such as blood sugar or insulin levels,” summarizes the Agency in the publication of its work. A physical exercise to be taken seriously, according to Irène Margaritis, deputy director of food, animal and plant health at ANSES. According to her, “today, public health prevention requires a new organization of our lifestyles. The Agency has been advocating for several years for the creation of environments favorable to an active lifestyle, whether through the organization of time or space, at school or at work.”
Limit cardiovascular diseases
Doing this regular exercise would therefore help to limit obesity, type 2 diabetes, certain cardiovascular diseases, respiratory or osteoarticular pathologies, and even certain cancers. And you have to start early! The agency strongly recommends that children adopt this reflex from an early age to incorporate these good habits into their lifestyle. Indeed, in France, 37% of adults spend eight hours a day sitting.
The positive effects of this regular physical activity would also be beneficial on “cognitive functions”, with in particular “an improvement in attention, reaction time, mood and a reduction in the feeling of fatigue”.
