Behan, whose career included winning the Irish road race super twin championship in 2014, was found guilty of raping, sexually assaulting, and engaging in sexual activity in front of a child. The crimes began in May 2019 when the victim was just seven years old.
Judge’s Harsh Criticism of Behan
In his sentencing, Judge Leeming criticized Behan for his lack of responsibility and empathy. The judge stated, “You accept no responsibility for your actions and you continue to deny them but I cannot accept it. You have no awareness, you have no empathy, and there is an element of victim-blaming throughout your pre-sentence report.”
Victim’s Impact
The physical and psychological toll on the young victim was severe. Prosecutor Mark Connor detailed the prolonged trauma endured by the child. The victim’s statement highlights the ongoing impact: “As a result of it, I cannot be close to anyone. It affects everything and I take it out on my family and on my friends.”

The investigation, which began in 2022 when the victim reported Behan to her teacher, relied heavily on forensic evidence. A detection dog found sperm traces on a blanket owned by the victim that matched Behan’s DNA.
Behan’s Defense
Behan’s defense attorney, Adam Watkins, argued that Behan struggled with alcohol and drug abuse following his father’s death. While acknowledging these challenges, Watkins stressed that they did not justify his actions. The judge, however, did not accept these mitigating factors.
Outcome of the Trial
The trial lasted a week, and the jury found Behan guilty of the charges presented by the prosecution. He was also found not guilty of an additional count of sexual assault by touching a child under 13. Behan was sentenced to 18 years in prison and placed in the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Police Statement
Detective Sergeant Scott Graves praised the victim’s bravery, stating, “Firstly, I would like to commend the victim who is now just 10 years old, for her bravery and courage shown throughout this investigation and trial. Sadly there are no winners in this case, however, I truly hope this result will provide her closure.”
DS Graves also expressed hope that the verdict would allow the victim to “eventually move on with her life,” ensuring she would no longer be at risk from Behan.
Conclusion
The sentencing of Connor Behan reflects the seriousness of the crimes committed against a vulnerable young child. It is a reminder of the justice system’s role in holding those responsible accountable for their actions and providing some measure of closure to survivors of sexual abuse.
