A 42 year old mother it ended in very serious conditions after taking a weight loss drug: what was supposed to be an aid to losing weight turned into a nightmare convulsions, neurological complications and a course of treatment that could last over a year. The story has shocked the family and raises new alarms about the risks of uncontrolled products.
The fat burning capsule
The case of Kellen Oliveira Bretas Antunestold by Fanpage.it, began last December when the woman, mother of a son, started taking a product advertised as a “fat-burning” capsule called Lipolesspurchased without any health prescription and not approved by the Brazilian authorities. After just three days, Antunes began to suffer severe abdominal pain and symptoms similar to drug poisoning, so much so that they had to go to the emergency room.
Doctors diagnosed intoxication and she was discharged.
But Kellen’s journey didn’t end there: the woman was hospitalized again when the symptoms intensified – muscle weakness, neurological problems and breathing difficulties – and she was then diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare condition in which the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, causing tingling, weakness and in the most severe cases paralysis. The treatments required include physiotherapy, speech therapy and the involvement of various specialists for at least 12 months.
Antunes, who worked as an administrative assistant, wanted to turn her experience into a warning. Endocrinologist Márcio Lauria, interviewed by G1, explained: «Drugs imported illegally or sold without control can contain any substance. Products without official certification guarantee neither safety nor effectiveness.”
